Performance RIBS Arrive
Rigid Inflatable Boats (or RIBs) represent the ultimate combination
of performance and versatility. They have long been the craft of
choice for maritime rescue services, the police and military because
they are fast, stable and virtually unsinkable.
In Europe, RIBs are very popular as sports boats in their own right
and very trendy among fashion-conscious boaties. The fact that RIBs
take up less space when stored, are relatively lightweight and very
stable makes them popular amongst European and British boaties.
Sports RIBs are also the craft of choice with owners of large
cruisers and superyachts especially, because of their soft sides and
great stability.
For all the above
reasons it's great to see a company importing the latest European
RIB sports boat to Australia. The Melbourne Boat Show saw local
company RIBsport, unveil its range of high-quality
British made Shearwater and Revenger sports RIBs.
These sleek-looking inflatables are developed from race-winning
powerboat designs and are among the fastest production boats
available today. For instance, the Revenger 715 is fitted with a
150hp Evinrude E TEC motor and easily does 50 plus knots top speed.
Besides being fast these RIBs are also exceptionally soft riding in
choppy water thanks
to their fibreglass deep-Vee hull and bonded inflatable tubes,
making for a cushioned ride. The air-filled collar also makes for
additional buoyancy and stability. They are virtually unsinkable
because of the buoyancy collar being divided into separate chambers.
Director of RIBsport, Jonathan Lettin, says the open Revenger models
will be suitable as tenders to larger super yachts, whilst the
Shearwaters with their cabins will be especially suited to private
sports boat use.
Lettin says it's important to note these RIBs can handle our very
variable Australian boating conditions. They are also very
people-friendly with their moulded, self-draining cockpits and
plenty of seating.
